Idaho is a coined or invented word, and is not a derivation of an
Indian phrase "E Dah Hoe (How)" supposedly meaning "gem of the
mountains."
A silk flag, blue field, five feet six inches fly, and four feet four inches on pike, bordered with gilt fringe two and one-half inches in width, with state seal of Idaho twenty-one inches in diameter, in colors, in the center of a blue field. The women represents liberty, justice and equality. The man is a miner. The pictures on the shield represent the main industries of forestry, farming and mining. The cornucopias, or horn of plenty are symbols of abundance. The elks head represents wildlife. Esto perpetua (Let it be perpetual). The words "State of Idaho" are embroidered in with block letters, two inches in height on a red band three inches in width by twenty-nine inches in length, the band being in gold and placed about eight and one-half inches from the lower border of fringe and parallel with the same. Flag adopted 1907.

The region was explored by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark in 1805?1806. It was then a part of the Oregon country, held jointly by the United States and Great Britain. Boundary disputes with Great Britain were settled by the Oregon Treaty in 1846, and the first permanent U.S. settlement in Idaho was established by the Mormons at Franklin in 1860.
After gold was discovered at Orofino Creek in 1860, prospectors swarmed into the territory, but they left little more than a number of ghost towns.
In the 1870s, growing white occupation of Indian lands led to a series of battles between U.S. forces and the Nez Percé, Bannock, and Sheepeater tribes.
The Lewis & Clark Highway (United State Highway 12) is the shortest route from the midwest to the Pacific Coast and the longest highway within a national forest in the nation. The economy of Idaho City originally developed around gold mining in the 1860s. Idaho's world famous hot springs are located in Lava Hot Springs. Hell's Canyon is the deepest gorge in America. Shoshone Falls, The Niagara of the West, spills over a 212-foot drop near Twin Falls. Idaho ghost towns include Silver City, Yankee Fork, Gold Dredge, and the Sierra Silver Mine. Seven Devils' Peaks, one of the highest mountain ranges in Idaho, Includes Heaven's Gate Lookout, where sightseers can look into four states.
The 1990s saw a remarkable growth in the high technology industries, concentrated in the metropolitan Boise area.
With the growth of winter sports, tourism now outranks other industries in revenue. Idaho's many streams and lakes provide fishing, camping, and boating sites. The nation's largest elk herds draw hunters from all over the world, and the famed Sun Valley resort attracts thousands of visitors to its swimming, golfing, and skiing facilities.
Points of interest are the Craters of the Moon National Monument; Nez
Percé National Historic Park, which includes many sites visited by Lewis
and Clark; and the State Historical Museum in Boise. Other attractions
are the Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area south of
Boise, Hells Canyon on the Idaho-Oregon border, and the Sawtooth
National Recreation Area in south-central Idaho.
